Third I Rex Artist- Dead Woman's Ditch Interview up

1. Explain the sound of Dead Woman's Ditch from the Bands perspective?

It's always had elements of blackened doom with odd timings, I think perhaps the black side is a bit stronger on Hraefn than before. Saying that there's a strong groove to it as Glenn did the bass, and isn't one to just follow or copy the guitar riffs. You never know we might swing back to a doomier sound again one day.

2. Who do the Demos and Seo Mere Saetan Differ from Hraefn ?

Recording the demos, which feels like a lifetime ago, we were finding our feet as a band, and as sound engineers... we record everything ourselves diy.

The overall sound is much better now and we've been more experimental this time, which is made a bit easier going back to a 3 piece as we're particularly comfortable in each other's company, musically.

3. The artwork for Hraefn is very primitive interesting how does it tie into the theme of the record?

The main art of the raven (Hraefn) is something Skinny did and Robin owns, as his surname means Raven too. At least two of the songs refer to the old stories of John Walford and Dead Woman's Ditch, '...the ravens in the wood all sing at once their discontent...'.

4. This is your 2nd Record for Third I rex how did partnership come to be and have you been pleased with all that has come from it ?

Roberto from Third I Rex came to see us play at the Black Heart in Camden and immediately expressed an interest in releasing our first album. He's been fantastic at spreading the word and getting our releases out there ever since. He's a good man.

5. on Hraefn i hear Doom , Black metal, Post Punk and 70's Prog elements what bands influenced this album?

That would be a very long list indeed, but you hear correctly! We've listened to a huge amount of stuff between us over the years, and the Ditch has elements of all of it.

6. How has social media, digital media and podcast changed the way underground bands present music to the world in 2020?

A very long time ago when I was young you would post out tapes or cd's to people who might like your stuff. Nowadays while it's easier to communicate with listeners, they're inundated with new stuff being fired at them so are perhaps less likely to actually listen to any of it.

7. Live or Studio which does the band enjoy more and how do the differ of members of Dead Woman's Ditch?

I think we'd all rather be doing gigs than sitting in a studio but being just three of us now we decided that at least for now it needs to be a studio/recording band. To play live we'd have to get in some session musicians.

8. Does it get tiring to always have that Electric Wizard connection as you truly are your own band in sound and outlook?

Not really, it's pretty clear we're nothing like the Wizard and no one really brings it up these days.

9. What is the current scene like in the part of the UK you are from? Any stand out bands?

I'm sure there's some great stuff going on but I don't know of much around here, it's just crows, grey skies and barbed wire as far as the eye can see.

10. Do the lyrics or music come 1st when recording and does it need to be that way to work?

We tend to write the music first and then experiment with vocal styles for each song later, we almost do everything backwards but it works for us. We'll try a few things and pretty quickly find something that works, often as a first experimental take which some of the vocals on the album are.

11. How do Visuals and Aesthetics make the band who they are?

For us it's very much about the sound and the songs, mental imagery. That's what makes us, not much else.

12. If you could make a proper full video for any track off Hraefn. Which would it be any why ?

Deny would be a good one for a video, some good mental images in that one but I wouldn't know how to make them into a video!

13. What bands would you like to tour with and will we see you in USA in 2020?

I'm sure we'd all say different answers to that, for me I'd say Ved Buens Ende, we'd love to play in the USA but I can't see it being this year unfortunately.

14. Thank you for the time any closing thoughts here .

Thanks for showing an interest, we'll be back soon.
