Sometimes the past is where the future reaches too ..
Void of Sleep- Metaphora- Digital/LP/ CD (Aural Music)
Coming out of Italy we have the third release from Void of Sleep which as I listen to is mix of Prog, Stoner, Sludge and Post metal overtones. I know I'm going down an odd path but come with me please. Imagine Anathema, Isis, Rosetta, Mastodon, Nevermore and Opeth into something that is really driving, powerful and Bluesy. The arrangements as over the top thought provoking as well and you can hear how heavy, dark and complex can work in the best of way. You can even hear elements of Tool, In The Woods and Green Carnation as well in this album. I have listened to a little of Void of Sleep in the past but with Metaphora its making me want to dig back and see if it was just not a head space I was in earlier. Being the last album was 5 yrs back. There is an epic meets sci fi vibe to all of this as well. Ok I'm drifting off again. But really love this album esp those ultra Doomy Mastodon meets Crowbar riff moments. There is not much more to be said other then the vocals are a mix of sung, growls and prog styled. Let your journey begin.
Black Vice- The Alchemist's Vision- Digital/LP/Tape ( Crown and Throne Ltd.)
Melodic and Spacial Black metal with a very raw and sinister overtone is what I'm getting from Black Vice. They like to add a punk and pagan feel to the over all presentation. The vocals are grim but in a much more subdued way and the guitar have a very other worldly with heavy doses of reverb and that fragile and frail tone that really takes the Post black metal theme into mind. Oh then we turn the corner and its blistering and a much added fury to the over all fell of the album . Black Vice likes to cross the realms of old school and 2nd wave Post Black metal with one foot deep in the occult and pagan ideals. This is one of the times were its not over produced but done with the level needed to hear everything but keep that underground and unsettling style going through out the record. Texas really is starting to have its own post black metal style and with Black Vice you will know what I mean from 1st listen.
Subtype Zero- Ceremonious Extinction- Digital/CD ( Seeing Red Records)
Subtype Zero you are everything I loved in late 80's . This is Satanic Extreme Thrash with punk and proto Death metal overtones . Are you fans of Slayer, Possessed, Bathory, Kreator , Sodom and Hellhammer then really look no further this EP is going to be your disc of 2020. This album is crushing and pummeling in what it wants to present to you . Fuck the solos are just so Bay area thrash it makes my heart skip a beat. At times the sound like Violence and Overkill too . Subtype Zero I love this Thrash revival and I really hope it never ends as this was music with meaning , power and creativity when you could have a bill with five different bands and they were all under the lumberer of THRASH !!!!
Anthropophagous- Spoiled Marrow- Digital/ 7" ( Blood Harvest)
I don't often review 7" releases but when an release like this comes across my desk Anthropophagous needs the word spread like the plague it is. from reading it was a demo tape and Blood Harvest wisely scooped this up and released it as a 7" and digital. Four track of ugly, nasty primitive, noisy Death/Thrash that just comes at you from all corners refusing to let you out of it's grips. The guttural vocal and ultra sick bass heavy riffs. Its the dark thrash grooves of all the 80's and 90's greats that make it for me . This album cover is something you would have seen on Combat, Megaforce or roadracer labels for that time. I just want a circle pit from begining to the very end of a show from these guys. They fucking love Cianide, Possessed, Slayer and Carcass you can just hear it and it makes it all the more special to me. Get this or your going to be sadly missing out .
