Nevoa- The Absence of Void- CD/ Digital ( Altare Productions)
More Epic Post Black metal with a very shoegazing element within it's framework as well. The Melodies as those sweep and expansive one that you hear now from the new wave of Northwest Blackened metal bands like Wolves in the throne room, Alda, Wolvserpent, Agalloch etc mix with bands like elements of bands like Anathema, Fen, Deafhaven etc . I thin you very clearly get where I'm going with this project . Portugal is becoming a bigger and bigger land for extreme and experimental metal sounds. Nevoa is as haunting as caustic in sound and creation. Altare Production has a band we should all be taking notice of as Nevoa can come out of no where and really rattle the black metal music world. The folk, Ritualistic and Post black metal is shining bright with this band ... Very impressive and complex yet delicate at same time. I swear at times they even have a love for Amber Asylum and Third and the Mortal. More Please and soon Nevoa.
Shape of Despair- Monotony Fields - CD/ Digital ( Seasons of Mist)
Where is the 90's Funeral doom movement been well it looks like 2015 is bringing it back in a massive wall of molasses like Brilliance with Skepticism and now Shape of Despair. My soul aches with the majesty of the primitive drumming, Pianos, Organs, Lumbering guitars and bass and those deep ultra guttural vocals that you know the moment you hear them. Ahhh the waves of sonic depression and pain are just what the doctor's ordered for a Doom metal fan. Every track over 7-11 minutes in length and have that wonderful build up and time to be come wall of low end we all need in this genre. With each release Shape of Despair add some new element this time out is a Post rock vibe to the way the reverb and layers ebb and flow through out the album. This could be the soundtrack to the last few survivors of a dying forget world. We have one of Doom metal's elite soldiers with Shape of Despair ... Time and time again they keep showing how to expand the style and keep the very roots at hand as well. The candle burns eternal at the window for you to come home my dear dear friends..
Vaee Solis- Adversarial Light- CD/ Digital ( Signal Rex/ Mordgrimm)
Black doom in the most tormented and tortured manners . The female vocals are that of bands like 13, Black lodge, Damad, Crisis etc. The suffering you can hear in the vocals are amazing and soul reaping. The music is cold and raw like black metal of northern europe with that crusty/sludge doom full low end and slow tempo that just claws right under your skin. There is a noisy hardcore element going at time like Oathbreaker and His hero is gone. You can just feel the sorrow and aggression with every note and riff that is being released from Adversarial Light. Bands like Vaee Solis are something that will fester in your mind and make you listen to them over and over again. There is nothing fast about this band but you never need it with a band like this. I hear elements of eye hate god and deinonychus all at the same time with this band. Many they have something every in common with the Dark/ Suicide Metal movement as well. What we have hear is as grim and sick as nightmarish and terrifying .
Fin amor- Forbidding Mourning- CD/ Digital ( Self Released)
As we move into a more futurist world bands like Fin amor really come out every one an a while to shake things up. This time we have a mix of Melodic , Symphonic, Tech Death metal with elements of Black Death and Prog metal into something that could have come from legendary bands like Edge of Sanity, Hypocrisy etc. There is a doom element that also comes from bands like Novembers Doom earlier days as well as bands like Paradise lost .. So Fin amor really comes from 2 or 3 different metal realms. This Brooklyn force needs to be heard and experienced by many more out there. So I hope many of you take a chance of a DIY band that deserve much success with the creativity and talent they have put into this release. They are a brooklyn band that has nothing to do with the scene that is there currently there is nothing indie or noise rock about them. I look forward to more and by bigger labels and support for this ultra talented unit.
Majestic Downfall- When Dead- CD/ Digital (Pulverised Records)
Ok this is nothing a expected with a band name like Majestic Downfall. It started out like a atmospheric doom metal force from the Peaceville glory days and with the 1st full track its blistering black death like Dissection, Samael and Behemoth then half way through the track it goes back to the death doom sounds of early Tiamat, My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost.. This band is another playing mind games with genres in the most wonderful of way as well. " When Dead" is huge in sound and scape of arrangements. There is Bleak melody and an occult element to it all at the same time. The guitars go from space prog of Amorphis to will of Doom and then Black Death then back to the spaced out riffs again. I even hear elements of DHG and Early Code going on here. You even get that classic metal sound of Mercyful Fate and Sabbat.. You really need to hear it to fully understand and the more challenging of releases are the ones that stick with you long term.. Very interesting indeed ...
My Hollow-On Borrowed Time- CD/ Digital ( Self Released)
This Decade is the 1st time so many bands of amazing talents and skills are doing so many self releases with out label support and just working with good PR and Social media to get out to the world. With My Hollow they mix some elements that together make a potent combo for the metal world. They love Power metal, Extreme Thrash, Prog Death metal and a good dose of groove to come at you with both fist flying. If you could mix bands like Trials, Strapping young lad, Pantera, Warbringer and Testament to name a few.. The manic and aggressive nature of the band and very punchy bass lines makes this have a very modern and nu metal element to it but they are not really in the genre. There is a very post hardcore/Mathcore element to all of this as well. Damn it all I know is this is a great heavy metallic album with many many vocals styles and guitar riffage going on. Horns up and keep independent metal alive !!!
Take over and Destroy- Vacant Face-CD/ Digital ( Pulverised Records)
From my current home of Arizona come a mix of sounds that are just so out there its amazing. Mix Thrash, Prog, Indie Noise, Sci fi metal, Post Hardcore and Avant oddball elements. This is what if Mr Bungle, Dog Fashion Disco, Slayer , Voivod and Devin Townsend all got together and formed a band and just played the 1st things that came to mind and released. Absolutely fucking amazing in so many levels words will not even come close to explaining the levels of excitement this is giving to this reviewer. I love the horror elements within all of this as well. I want to call them the american Sigh at time as it has those weirdo 70's prog meets Black Death and avant wonderment that Sigh does at well but there is so much more going on here as well. Do not miss out on this it's god damn amazing !!!!
Hope Drone - Cloak of Ash- CD/ Digital (Relapse Records)
THIS ALBUM IS FUCKING ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING RELEASES OF 2015 !!!!! IT IS LAYERS OF POST METAL, DRONE, NOISE, ETHEREAL , SPACIAL PROG ROCK AND A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH FOR YEARS TO COME.... YES I'M YELLING THIS TO THE WORLD AS THE MIX SOME OF THE BEST BANDS EVER INTO SOMETHING EVEN BETTER.... THINK OF BANDS LIKE ALCHEMIST, WOLVHAMMER, ISIS, KHANATE, MINDROT, NEUROSIS, THE RED CORD, VOIVOD, WOLVSERPENT AND TRIPYKON and THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.. THEY HAVE ELEMENTS OF BANDS LIKE DOLORIAN AND KATATONIA AS WELL. OK IF I KEEP GOING ON I WILL NEVER STOP AS THIS MAYBE THE ALBUM OF 2015 FOR ME. I WANT JAMES PLOTKIN TO JOIN THIS BAND AS WELL AS I THINK THEY WOULD BE THE BAND TO UNITE THE SONIC REALMS TOGETHER AND GIVE US A 1000 YEARS OF PEACE. THIS ALBUM IS REALLY THAT GOOD.. GET IT OR FOREVER BE LOST!!!!!!!!!!
Funeral Throne- Threshold- CD/ Digital ( Blut & Eisen Productions)
Ambient and Hypnotic Post Black metal again with elements of Thrash, Shoegazing and just all out left field sounds. This at its heart is a Post Black metal release showing all the other sounds the band loves on its sleeves. There is even an old school gore/ death metal feeling coming through out the tracks from time to time. Some loves the old Black metal ways of Northern Europe and Northwest of America and wanted to mix it into some that even the noisiest of thrash and punk fans could love as well. This is aural chaos in all it's stellar grandiose traditions . With bands like Funeral Throne the past is something the want to expand and experiment on with 2015 ideals and technology and the two work very well with a band of this talent. This is an album with many themes, styles , layers and even most times to listen to it and hear something new..
