Deepsend Artist Hybrid Interview
Iván here
1. For us new to Hybrid how did the band create the style and sound which is part Doom, Noise, Jazz, Grind and Death metal all in one?
We don't really have a formula, we are three open minded guys so it's pretty natural to us the mix between genres, we only think in what fits better in each song (and vaginas of course).
2. You just released your latest album Angst on Deepsend records how did you come to sign with this major up and coming label?
Graham is a great guy with a great beard and offer us a green card to go to the States and work in a Taco Bell, muchos gracias amigo, joking aside Deepsend was the best offer we had, Graham trusted the band because he really liked our music. We know it's a hard time for the record companies and giving a chance to an experimental band like us is a risk that few labels dare, so kudos to Graham for his risky bussiness - http://youtu.be/Dk30-AtiB4M
3. What is a live show like for Hybrid with your bombastic, complex and creative sound. Is it similar to album or do you rework the songs like to make them something all there own?
It's rawer than the album, like every single band in the planet unless you did playback, sometimes we do minor changes but in the end it's all about having fun on the stage and put your best metal poses to the drunk audience.
4. Are early albums different very much in sound or has this sound been here all along?
The sound is slightly different, mainly because the way of writing songs of the previous band members and the fact that the tuning was different, but the idea behind the band it's quite similar, mixing extreme metal with other genres we like.
5. Will we see a proper video off of Angst if so which track would you want and why?
I doubt it, we don't have money to spend on it, and we don't want to do a crappy low budget one, maybe we can do a lyric video with vaginas.
6. As a band Hybrid what are your thoughts on the 21st century digital age. Do you feel it waters down the underground scene or is a new age for extreme music were if you make impressive music and have good pr and distro you can make the world hear your music?
It's cool, now you can watch tons of porn for free, download every single weird thing you can imagine and use your smartphone 24h a day to ignore other human beings, besides this, internet is a great tool for promotion but some bands are more focused on selling T-Shirts, cups, thongs or increase his facebook likes than making good records. There always be a handful of great underground bands but people are busy hearing the same record on repeat and, in most cases, need an approval from the media to pay attention to a new band.
7. Hybrid seem to live on social media for your web presence?
do you feel bands dont need proper sites any more things like Bandcamp, reverbnation, facebook and google plus are they way to get fans the info they need? We don't have a website because we think it's easier for us using services like bandcamp, facebook, twitter etc ... but a good and well designed custom website is better for some especific things.
8.Does Angst have a theme or just a collection of crushing tracks?
Once again, it's a conceptual album, the main theme behind “Angst” is an intense feeling of existential anxiety and nihilism spread over the lyrics which fit with the bad vibrations of the songs. A lot of people told us about a certain despair and some kind of angsty mood after listening to the album and reading the lyrics, and that was our goal, it's the latest form of misanthropy!
9. If you were asked to describe Hybrid to an extreme music fan that has not heard you how would you tell them your sound and style is?
Beware, we are crazy vatos, ese...don´t fuck with el barrio, puto.
10. What are the members of Hybrid listening to . its tells a lot of what is influencing the band believe it or not?
Dodecahedron, Gadget, Ulcerate, Manowar, Anal cunt, Rotten Sound, Intronaut, Jeru The Damaja, Kiss, Gorguts, Genesis, Morbid Angel, Deftones, Converge, Wu Tang, Candiria, Isis, Emperor, Nas, The Radio Dept, Tyler The Creator, Cannibal Corpse, Johnny Cash.
11. The Spanish metal or extreme music scene is not well known to people of north america are there any bands you would like to spotlight or what is the scene like in Madrid in 2013?
Well, in my opinion most of the scene is full of clone bands doing thrash metal and recicled Nu metal bands doing postrock, metalcore or whatevercore, however there are some well known bands outside of our country like Machetazo, Avulsed, Haemorrague or Wormed and underground bands doing great stuff like Adrift, Aathma, Trocotombix, Orthodox or Foscor to name a few. Back in the time our crust scene was one of the best, bands like Ekkaia or Madame Germen were top bands in the genre. We also had good non metal bands like Betunizer, Disco Las Palmeras, Jardin de la Croix or Unicornibot.
12. If there was one band that Hybrid could collab with who would it be and why?
I don't know, we like lots of bands, in "Angst" we couldn't find a good M.C. to rhyme over a 3/4 beat, it would be great a collaboration with Jeru The Damaja or Mf Doom.
13. Do the members of Hybrid play or perform with any other projects?
Me and Chus played in other extreme metal band in the past called Fragments and now i play the guitar in an "Arena Rock" band called Cachalotauro, we are mixing our first EP right now and doing some local shows. Chus is a established drum teacher and is always busy playing with bands, check out his website for a complete list of recordings and shows. Antonio knows a lot about shemale porn.
