Nothing of what I expected and so much more then I needed edition of reviews....
Monsterworks- Malignment- Digital/CD ( Eat Lead or Die Music)
There are times that descriptions will just never to anything justice and trying to truly explain Monsterworks will be one of those. With every record I've heard they go deeper and deeper into the inventive and unusual. I hear Death Metal, Power Metal, Jazzy, Post Rock, Prog, Ethno and Bluesy overtones and that is really just in the 1st song of the album. Just for a Moments Take Opeth, Faith no more, Soundgarden, Veds buen ende, Pestilence, Testament, Death, Galactic Cowboys, Judas Priest , King Diamond and Thought Industry and you many have something close. There is just so much going on from Growls, To thrashy movements, Epic Dark grooves and even Industrial elements. I started with them in 2016 with Black Swan Annihilation. Again words can and will not ever give you a true understanding of how amazing Monsterworks is Avant Forward thinking metal. That is the best I will ever get to give.
Cancer (Aus)- Opioid- Digital/CD ( Self Released)
No No No this is not the legendary Death metal band folks these are some pissed off Post Black metal guys from Australia. I would say this duo mixes elements of Dark metal like Bethlehem & Deinonychus with Those more Black/Death elements of bands like Marduk, Behemoth and Watain. The vocals at time go very into that Vein of Shining ( Sweden), Forgotten Tomb , Joyless and Silencer. There are some very tormented tones and ideals going on with this record. This could almost be more like Depressive Black metal force. I think they have a lot in common with bands like Happy Days and Make a change ... Kill yourself too. I love that very unsettling raw and atmospheric black metal tone on guitars and the warm distant rumble of the bass. Cancer (Aus) is an power recording that demands time and respect to listen too and this is where I say YOUR TURN...
Bašmu- VVitchblood- Digital/CD ( Lunar Apparitions)
What the fuck did i just get myself into here. This Canadian one man force created by Xülthysy. is a mix of Dungeon Synth, AM Radio tones and the most primative raw lo fi Black metal I've heard in a very long time. I swear at times the drums are just pots and buckets being hit and distorted. The vocals if you can call them that are tormented howls, gurgles, whispers and cries. Basmu is very much what madness and mental illness sounds like and maybe that's why I like this fucked up journey so much. So clue were this going to go from track to track and that is what is keeping listening to this. Basmu don't you ever stop scaring the Normals!!!!
Obscure Relic- First Black Communion- Digital/Tape/CD (Helldprod Records)
Oh surprise from Brazil and guess what raw , punishing old school Black metal with those sloppy and blistering Thrash and punk elements that brought us the best 2nd wave BM from Norway , Poland and Germany. Shocking right..... No not at all. Obscure Relic is just what you think you going to get and again we need this Black metal to cleanse of the Gothic and Symphonic Black metal there needs to always be a ying and yang to all music. Black metal sometimes just needs to claw at the jugular and make sure Satan is still watching in the wings to crush some of the light of this world. This is a furious ride into old ways of Black metal and really just was what I needed at this moment well done you corpse painted crazy son of a bitches.
Uada- Djinn- Digital/LP/Tape/CD (Eisenwald)
Straight out of Portland Oregon comes Uada once more with the mix of Prog, Thrash, Classic Metal and Cascadian Black Metal. This being the 3rd release by them. This is something of a mix of catchy, grim, complex and retro in the ideals of underground metal. There are some amazing sweeping guitar harmonies going on there and then yes it goes into blistering Black metal frenzy's. I really love Uada when the more 80's metal mix with Thrash and Post Punk elements all mix together, Where they almost sound like a Black metal version of Killing Joke . There are some many moments on Djinn you can hear elements of Dissection and Edge of Sanity and this is where Uada so stand out the mix Melodic into the Black/Death overtones of the Proggy and Classic tones. This album just gets better listening to it over and over again. Honestly one of the best extreme metal albums of 2020 so far for this reviewer.
