Black Lion Recording Artist Kull Interivew is up
1. 1st question I need to ask why not continue with Bal-Sagoth as there is a very similar over tone? This is really to the Maudling Brothers? Did Byron not want to move on with new record?
-I had not seen Byron in a long time and there were no new plans for anything for Bal-Sagoth on the horizon. So the remaining members of the band wanted to do something new, with a different vocalist/story teller. This seemed like the natural thing for us with a new name. Kull music sounds like Bal-Sagoth because Chris and I write the music like in Bal-Sagoth, and Chris has a very distinct guitar sound.
2. Tarkan's voice as a more Hardcore/punk element at times and works well with Kull. It reminds me of early Bal Sagoth stuff up to "Starfire Buring " Were you looking for that heavier side to come back?
- Not particularily, but those elements certainly worked in a couple of tracks. Vocally we were in unkown terretory, and alot of the sculpting of what we wanted was in the mixing and editing.
3. How did you come to work with Black Lion, a label I have not really be following and what are you looking for out of "Exile" from them?
-For me a new direction with a fresh young label that knew this music and had that energy. That was fine for me.
4. The theme behind " Exile" tell us about it and how the amazing Seafaring artwork plays into the album?
-More of a question for Tarkan, but one of the tracks "An Ensign Consigned" definately suits that imagery.
5. Why the name Kull and the meaning for it ?
- Chris and I wanted "Krull", then we shyd away from it because of the film.We all liked "Kull", Its to the point, and relates to the bombastic imagery of the band and is a nod in the direction of Bal-Sagoth.
6. You have worked with label as small as Cacophonous Records ( which I heard was a struggle) to someone as massive as Nuclear Blast . Are smaller or bigger labels more helpful to extreme metal artists?
- If you are refering to Bal-Sagoth, I felt more connected to Cacophonous than Nuclear Blast, but that was bound to happen. I didnt really sense any change in status or anything with a bigger label because we always had a strong fanbase.
7. Being from the UK there is a rich Black, Death and Doom metal heritage do you think were your from helped mold Bal Sagoth and now Kull sound and vision

- With Bal-Sagoth yes in the early days, but we gradually moved away from the doom and death metal aspects of the sound. Also most Black Metal bands play in concert pitch, Chris was always downtuned to B. We just stuck with it, maybe it gave us an edge?
8. What bands are impressing the members of Kull currently?
-I cant answer because im not up on the scene that much. I cant say I look to my contempories, or current metal bands for inspiration. I never did.
9. Do the members of Kull have other projects or is Kull the only driving force needed?
-I do odd music jobs for various artists, but have been involved with composing and keyboard work for My Dying Bride, and Elvenking recently.
10. You started in a time of Paper zines, Tape trading and word of mouth at shows . How has the digital age changed all this Bandcamp, You tube, Facebook and digital media in general?
-Enormously.
11. Will Kull be touring or more just local venues. Will the USA has a chance to witness a live spectacle ?
-Hard to say, depends how well our debut does. We dont count anything out.
12. If you had to do it all over again with Bal-Sagoth would you change it or No?
-No I dont think I would.
13.As Kull is really new, what are you looking for, is this it or is it just the next musical journey?
-It is what it is, Im liking the way its going, thats the way I see it.
14. If you are making a proper video for any take off " Exile " which would it be and why?
-Probably Aeolian Supremacy because of its epic nature.
15. Thank you for the time any closing thoughts here
