In The Woods - Cease the day- CD/ Digital /LP ( Debemur Morti Productions )

This the 2nd album with vocalist  James Fogarty  I want to start with that as this has a much more classic In the woods sound but still growing on the Prog and Avant metal elements. I do love the Blackened elements back in the mix.  We have very much a mix of  In the heart of ages meets Strange in Stereo going on here . The only original member is currently drummer Andrew and maybe at this point it should just be a new band as it does sound distant enough to be a new band as the are adding elements of Tenhi, Manes, Ihsahn and Arcturus were you can feel the past but this is a great band heading to a new future.  The Botteri brothers being gone the really outsider moments of the band and that psychedelic side is missing but the darker more metallic side is mixing in more and more.  The Vocals both clean and harsh work amazing with the melodic doom/blackened sounds coming from the speakers.  I can see why D.M.P released this as there is a very special sound coming from  In the woods . Even the acoustic moments are stunning.  Pagan Black/ Doom with a strong Folk and Post metal element is really what I'm getting here.  Welcome to 2018 where extreme music blurs all boundaries.

PROFANATICA- Altar of the Virgin Whore -MCD, 12" ,MLP, TAPE  Digital - (Hells Headbangers) 

Dirty, Ugly , Grim Black metal by a pioneering band that has making musical sickness for over two decades. There is always a punk and thrash element in this as well. This time from Profanatica I hear an early primal Death metal sound coming from the speakers to make it all more fierce and disgusting . You need that lo fi over the top hot high end style to make this sound all the more in you face and hate full . Yet with Profantica you get melodic side that draws you too it almost is a cult like manner, You need to see what is going on with this unit.  Through out this bleak and powerful journey I will say the EP has a very similar feeling and outcome. This is very much from were Marduk and Watain born from. If you don't love this style of extremity you still have to respect is as it's very well done.

Cortez- No More Conqueror- Digital, CD. LP (  WOOAAARGH )

Is there a such thing as Epic Post Hardcore if not them Cortez just created it. I want to call this orchestral Post Hardcore/ Math Rock. Wow this is some of the best production I have ever heard in hardcore styled music in years. This is crazy South American Tribal feeling coming though out this as well.  If I maybe so bold this is a more pissed off Jawbox or Fugazi in the way it's being Presented to the world. It's like if  Deadguy/ Kiss it goodbye had love children with the bands above and then started listening to album on Jadtree, Revelation and Victory reocrds from the 90's . There is a strong Amrep noise rock thing going on and don't let them fool you for a moment  they listened to the heavier Seattle stuff stuff like TAD , Melvins and Skin yard and added that to mix. Cortez " Holy SHIT" you have a stunning modern Post Hardcore, Noise, Extreme Punk as fuck album going on here. All I know is  need to find more from you and irritatingly wait for more from one of the best releases and bands in 2018 .

Wrong- Feel Great- CD/ Digital/LP ( Relapse)

Noise Rock, Punk and Metalcore what do all three things have in common they would not be around if there were not the following bands Melvin's, Jesus Lizard , Helmet and Unsane Tell me I'm wrong they are really the ones that brought us Metallic Noise Rock. Guess were the magic that is known as  Wrong come from just look above fools. Wrong has everything and I mean everything I love about the Genre and then go out to make it even better by putting there own left of center proggy/ weirdo stamp on the style and Genre. What else can you really say other then get the albums, see them live and make sure this sound never leaves this Earth . We need the next generation of bands growing up to hear Wrong and go shit I want to to do this and what the hell did Wrong listen to so a can hear that forward thinking group. Wrong make music that drives you and makes you move to the next idea. Keep up the amazing work gentlemen.

Barshasketh- Barshasketh- - CD/Digital/LP ( W.T.C. Productions )

Epic Occult Black Death with some of the more insane sound Post Black metal I've heard . There is again a sickness and almost a plague like feeling to what I'm hearing the talent some these band with synths, madness and the vocals so grim the average music listener would run the other direction. The cover of this album alone shows some very sinister and dark things going on and the music very much play a role into this with the seductive and ritualistic going on with the blistering and harmonic sides of what Barshasheth creates. I would but this more into bands like  Emperor, Death Spell Omega, Ishahn, Devouring Star, Blut Aus Nord etc. I would this in very high reguards. I would even say I hear a lot of Aosoth in this album too. I will now listening so some of the early works and see if this is something that just passed me by or maybe I was in a different place then.  Barshasketh is a must own when it arrives in early 2019 !!!

Sigh- Heir to Despair- CD/ Digital/ LP ( Candlelight )

So if  Orphaned Land, Acturus and Solefald had a love Child this would be what Sigh is and with each release this Japanese mastermind Mirai Kawashima add more jazz, avant electronics and industrial sounds, samples and full on orchestral prog metal into something that at it's heart was a Black metal band with eastern and oriental elements .  Now I would say Sigh is the perfect extreme metal circus and it's really has something for everyone. There truly magic in when ever Mirai Kawashima comes out with a new Sigh album . I know this is going to be way over the top for many but if you give this and the last few albums a spin starting with " Hangman's Hymns " you will see how amazing talented he is and those that work around Sigh. Candlelight you have a another stunning album with Sigh . Do not lose this musical genius ever !!!!
